From Pastor Suzanne: Brian Mc Laren writes in a sermon for this coming Sunday "We’ve all had experiences where something disrupts the norm and somebody does something that is inappropriate,” ... This naked man running around a graveyard in Luke 8:26-39, for instance. “Everyone knows about him and he’s kind of an embarrassment,” McLaren continues. But Jesus confronts the evil that oppresses him, casts it out, “saves” him. What would that kind of salvation look like in our own time — that beautiful freedom from oppression — and where do we begin?" (from Ministry Matters) This coming Sunday the ASP team comes back from their mission trip. They will have helped a family to have housing that is safer and better. Their current housing situation is dangerous and I am convinced that nobody, absolutely nobody, is happy to live in substandard housing, especially not a family with children. My son was not quite 2 years old when I grabbed him and a few belongings and ran out into homelessness. My family was far away, in another country. I did not know where we would sleep, what we would eat, what we would do - but I knew that anything was safer than the situation we were in. We were offered a mobile home by someone but he warned us that it needed work. Upon arrival at the trailer park, the situation was worse than I imagined - the roof looked old and about to cave in and the floor inside was rotten through and only in some places covered by plywood to walk on. I was scared and worried about my son and my own health and safety - but some roof was better than no roof - and a bathroom with a hole in the floor was better than no bathroom. I was incredibly fortunate to have the right people come into my life at that time. I trusted strangers. With their help, I was able to look for a job, find one, obtain housing (someone co-signed) and to begin life anew. But it took time- a long time. And before I achieved a somewhat stable environment for my little family of two; there was a lot of shame and embarrassment for being homeless and dependent on what people call "handouts". To me, when I think of salvation in our own time, then I envision a world where nobody has to live in substandard housing, where all have access to food, and where all have whatever they need to live a full life. I envision a world where we walk with those who are falling on rough times and help them to get back up rather than question their eligibility. I envision a world where there is no racisms, no discrimination, no violence, no hate, no oppression, no poverty. I think that is the world that Jesus dreams of, too. And the ASP team is, one nail at a time and one roof trusses at a time and more, making this vision seem just a bit closer to becoming reality. I am incredibly proud of what they are doing - even as I hope for a world where that kind of work is no longer needed. Jesus calls us to love our neighbors. The ASP team is doing that right now - may the love they are living and showing be an inspiration for all of us to go and do likewise. Come and hear them speak of their journey this Sunday at the 9:30 worship service.
